Documentary

Documentary production from Carinthia, Austria, since 1995: we make documentaries for cinema, TV and video on demand. Our adventure documentaries and expedition films follow authentic characters to the edge of the map: a cliff diver on an iceberg, an adventurer on a bicycle boat, three muleteers from different centuries. From research and shoot to the finished cut, it all comes from one team.

Expedition films from the edge of the map

We film where the map ends. For “Pura Vida” (2016) we followed Hervé Neukomm, who sets out to cross the Amazon from the Andes to the Atlantic on a self-made bicycle boat; filming ran from 2012 to 2016. “A Sustainable Life in the Amazon” was shot in 2012 on a journey of several months from Leticia in Colombia to the Rio Ampiyacu in Peru, in sensitive exchange with the indigenous peoples.

Both films won awards: “Pura Vida” was named Best Film at Expedition Camera in the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 2017, and “A Sustainable Life in the Amazon” won a category prize at the International Festival of Outdoor Films in Prague in 2014. Altogether we count 23 festival awards in 10 countries between 1998 and 2017, from Graz and Trento to Moscow, Denver and Vancouver.

Documentaries from Carinthia and Austria

Not every story needs an expedition. In 2021 we made the museum film “Die Säumer”: three muleteers from between 1500 and 1800 talk directly to each other in a three-way split screen. It can be seen at the Säumermuseum in Mittersill, Pinzgau. For the Hohe Tauern National Park we have made several documentaries, such as “Leben unter Wasser” (2011), and in 2008 we made “Rittlingers Traum” together with the State of Carinthia and WWF.

We also work for cinema and television: as camera operators on the cinema documentary “Top of Europe” (Robert Schabus, Geyrhalter Filmproduktion), with “Entre Ríos” for the Colombian broadcaster Telepacífico and with “Cape Horn” for Servus TV.

From research to the finished cut

For us, a documentary starts with research and trust. In 2012 Thomas Miklautsch spent several months on the Amazon before the life stories of the people he met along the way became a film. We shoot, edit and grade ourselves. For sound, light and music we bring in specialists from our network, depending on the project.

Some films take years. We spent a long time looking for funding for “Life on the Brink”, our portrait of cliff diver Orlando Duque, then we made it ourselves. A long companionship became a personal journey through his life; the film is now in post-production.

Frequently asked questions

What does a documentary cost?

It depends mainly on the number of shooting days, the size of the crew and the amount of post-production. After a short conversation about your project, we send you a quote.

How does a documentary production work?

You write to us through the contact form, and we talk about the idea, the characters and the locations. Research, concept and shoot follow, then editing, colour grading and sound in our own edit suite until the finished cut.

Do you only film in Austria?

No. We film in Carinthia and all over Austria, for example in the Hohe Tauern, and worldwide: in Antarctica, on the Amazon, in Colombia, in Brazil and around Cape Horn.

Which broadcasters have you made documentaries for?

Among others for Servus TV (“Cape Horn”), Red Bull TV (“The Antarctic Dive”) and the Colombian broadcaster Telepacífico (“Entre Ríos”). On the cinema documentary “Top of Europe” (Robert Schabus, Geyrhalter Filmproduktion), we worked as camera operators.

How long is an adventure documentary?

That depends on the story and where it will be shown: “Pura Vida” runs 45 minutes, the sports documentary “Sand, Speed & Gold” 15 minutes.
